AMCC Releases 2011-2012 Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Teams

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference kicked off NCAA Division III Week on Monday by announcing its 2011-2012 Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Teams.

At the end of each sport's season of competition, student-athletes vote for their team's representative for the conference's All-Sportsmanship Team. The honor is open to members of every team in an AMCC championship sport.

To be recognized, the student-athlete nominated from each team must consistently demonstrate a high level of ethical conduct, respect, and fair play in both practice and competition. The student-athlete must also serve as a positive representative of school spirit at other teams' sporting events.

The 11 Penn State Altoona student-athletes who were voted to the Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Team are:

-Women's Volleyball: Marina Cotarelo (North Salem, NY/John F.Kennedy)

-Men's Golf: Landon Hollenshead (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan)

-Women's Cross Country: Kristen Cummings (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood)

-Men's Cross Country: Will Aldridge (Corapolis, PA/Moon Area)

-Women's Soccer: Brindy Feese (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy)

-Men's Soccer: Zachary Yoas (South Williamsport, PA/South Williamsport)

-Women's Tennis: Katelyn Piper (Roaring Spring, PA/Martinsburg Central)

-Women's Swimming & Diving: Mary Elizabeth McCulloch (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle)

-Men's Swimming & Diving: Jay Wareham (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County)

-Women's Basketball: Casey Drick (Elimsport, PA/Montgomery)

-Men's Basketball: Jordan Stiles (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria)

Penn State Altoona Places Sixth in AMCC Women's Tennis Championships

WEXFORD, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team finished in sixth place in the 2011 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Oxford Athletic Club.

The #6 seeded Kathryn Dudley (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) provided the lone win for the Lady Lions, earning a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 upset of La Roche College's #3 seed Melanie Ward in a #6 Singles match on Saturday.

Dudley lost to Franciscan University's #2 seeded Hannah Pettit in the second round.

Penn State Behrend won the championship, finishing with 26 total points combined in singles and doubles.

Women's Tennis Ends Regular Season With 5-4 Win Over Thiel

ALTOONA, Pa. - In their final regular season match of the 2011 schedule, the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team edged non-conference opponent Thiel College on Sunday afternoon at the Adler Tennis Courts.

The Lady Lions took two of three doubles matches. The pairs of Alex Grund (Philadelphia, PA/Cheltenham)/Taylor Pompili (Renovo, PA/Bucktail) and Caroline Dudley (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional)/Kathryn Dudley (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) earned wins in #2 and #3 doubles.

Penn State Altoona split in singles play. Grund, Pompili, and Emily Hockenberry (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) won in #3, #4, and #5 singles.

Women's Tennis Falls 8-1 to La Roche

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team lost 8-1 to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche College on Friday afternoon at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Katelyn Piper (Roaring Spring, PA/Martinsburg Central) had the lone victory for the Lady Lions, winning 6-3, 6-0 in #2 singles.

Penn State Altoona rounds out the 2011 regular season with a non-conference match against Thiel College on Sunday.

Women's Tennis Splits in Weekend Buffalo Trip

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team lost 5-4 at D'Youville College on Saturday night, then bounced back for a 7-2 win at Medaille College on Sunday.

The Lady Lions went 3-for-6 in singles against D'Youville. Alex Grund (Philadelphia, PA/Cheltenham), Taylor Pompili (Renovo, PA/Bucktail), and Emily Hockenberry (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) won in #3, #5, and #6 singles, respectively.

But Penn State Altoona was able to win just one of three events in doubles, as the pair of Caroline Dudley (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional)/Kathryn Dudley (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) won in #3 doubles.

Against Medaille, the Lady Lions secured four wins in singles play. Alexis Orr (Muncy, PA/Muncy) won in #1, Grund won in #3, Aeriale Spotts (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) won in #4, and Hockenberry won in #6.

Penn State Altoona swept Medaille in doubles, as the pairs of Orr/Katelyn Piper (Roaring Spring, PA/Martinsburg Central), Grund/Pompili, and Kathryn Dudley/Kelsey Pfeiffenberger (Gilbertsville, PA/St. Pius X) were all victorious.
