AMCC Releases 2011-2012 Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Teams

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference kicked off NCAA Division III Week on Monday by announcing its 2011-2012 Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Teams.

At the end of each sport's season of competition, student-athletes vote for their team's representative for the conference's All-Sportsmanship Team. The honor is open to members of every team in an AMCC championship sport.

To be recognized, the student-athlete nominated from each team must consistently demonstrate a high level of ethical conduct, respect, and fair play in both practice and competition. The student-athlete must also serve as a positive representative of school spirit at other teams' sporting events.

The 11 Penn State Altoona student-athletes who were voted to the Fall and Winter All-Sportsmanship Team are:

-Women's Volleyball: Marina Cotarelo (North Salem, NY/John F.Kennedy)

-Men's Golf: Landon Hollenshead (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan)

-Women's Cross Country: Kristen Cummings (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood)

-Men's Cross Country: Will Aldridge (Corapolis, PA/Moon Area)

-Women's Soccer: Brindy Feese (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy)

-Men's Soccer: Zachary Yoas (South Williamsport, PA/South Williamsport)

-Women's Tennis: Katelyn Piper (Roaring Spring, PA/Martinsburg Central)

-Women's Swimming & Diving: Mary Elizabeth McCulloch (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle)

-Men's Swimming & Diving: Jay Wareham (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County)

-Women's Basketball: Casey Drick (Elimsport, PA/Montgomery)

-Men's Basketball: Jordan Stiles (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria)

ECAC Names Barcia to South Region All-Star Team

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference named Penn State Altoona senior defender Meredith Barcia (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) to its 2011 Division III South Region All-Star team on Thursday.

Barcia was picked to the second team of the ECAC South All-Stars.

Barcia played in all 22 games for the Lady Lions in 2011. She anchored the team's back line and scored three goals to go along with four assists, helping Penn State Altoona go 14-5-3 overall this past season -- including 8-0-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

The inclusion of Barcia on the ECAC Division III South Region All-Star team marks the second year in a row that Penn State Altoona women's soccer has had a representative among the top players in its region.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its 2011 NCAA Women's Soccer Division III All-Great Lakes Region Team on Friday, and it included Penn State Altoona senior defender Meredith Barcia (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) as a Third Team selection.

FROSTBURG, Md. - A former Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival dealt a blow to Penn State Altoona women's soccer on Saturday afternoon, as Frostburg State University defeated the Lady Lions 5-1 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Region Semifinals.

Frostburg, the #1 seed in the bracket, jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 27:59 mark of the first half on two goals by Adria Graham and another by Stephanie Fazenbaker.

Meredith Waters (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township) put Penn State Altoona on the board at 29:13, cutting the Lady Bobcats' lead to 3-1 on her unassisted goal.

But Fazenbaker added two more goals in the second half for the home team, and Frostburg advances to play in the ECAC Division III South championship game on Sunday.

ALTOONA, Pa. - The #4 seed Penn State Altoona women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over #5 seed Penn State Abington on Wednesday night at Spring Run Stadium in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Region Quarterfinals.

The win advances the Lady Lions to the semifinals round, where they will travel to face #1 seed Frostburg State University this Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 PM.

Penn State Altoona made it 1-0 at the 14:00 mark of the first period when Marlee Hibbs (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township) took Meredith Waters' (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township) pass and scored.

The Lady Lions increased their lead to 2-0 at 55:28 when Lindsey Benner (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) fired a shot to the back of the net.

Penn State Altoona held an 18-2 advantage in total shots, including a 7-1 mark in shots on goal.
