Men's Tennis Closes Out Season With 8-1 Loss to Frostburg

ALTOONA, Pa. - The 2012 Penn State Altoona men's tennis season came to an end on Thursday afternoon when the Lions lost 8-1 to Frostburg State University in a non-conference match at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Penn State Altoona's lone victory came in #2 doubles, where the duo of Michael Reinhardt (Altoona, PA/Hollidaysburg)/Adam Kennedy (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township) battled to a 9-8 (4) win.

After taking two out of three in doubles, Frostburg swept the Lions in singles.

WEXFORD, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's tennis placed third in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Men's Tennis Championships this weekend at Oxford Athletic Club.

Franciscan University won the event, and Penn State Behrend placed second.

In the first round on Saturday afternoon, the Lions enjoyed much success.

In doubles, Penn State Altoona went 3-0.

In #1 doubles, the #4 seeded duo of Max Averbach (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East)/Benjamin Heidorn (Bedford, PA/Bedford) defeated Pitt-Bradford's #5 Allan Miller/Ian Vaughn 8-4.

Michael Reinhardt (Altoona, PA/Hollidaysburg)/Brian Schultz (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg), seeded #3 in the #2 doubles bracket, won 8-2 over Pitt-Greensburg's #6 seeded team of Jakob Schafer/Kyle Stine.

In #3 doubles, the #3 pair of Adam Kennedy (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township)/Kevin Bartkus (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) topped D'Youville College's #6 seeded squad of John Krieg/Derek Schall 8-0.

Penn State Altoona's winning carried over to the day's singles play, as the team went 4-1.

In #1 singles, #4 Averbach defeated #5 C.J. Price of Pitt-Greensburg in a tightly-contested match 7-6 (4), 6-4.

#4 Kennedy beat Pitt-Bradford's #5 Vaughn 6-1, 6-2 in #2 singles.

In #4 singles, #3 Reinhardt defeated #6 Schafer, from Pitt-Greensburg, 6-2, Ret.

Heidorn, the #3 seed in #5 singles, beat D'Youville's #6 Marc Moyer 6-0, 6-1.

The Lions tallied eight points on Saturday, putting them behind Franciscan and Behrend in the championship standings. Each of those teams held nine points after day one.

On Sunday, Penn State Altoona's doubles pairs were each defeated, as they faced stiff competition from the teams ahead of them in the standings.

The Lions did pick up two wins in singles, however.

Averbach pulled an upset of the top seed in the #1 singles bracket, defeating D'Youville's Steve Beatty 4-1, Ret.

In #6 singles, Sebastian Bonifasi (Dominican Republic/Carol Morgan School), who earned a first round bye as the top seed in his bracket, bested the #4 seed Dylan Nuzzo from Pitt-Bradford 6-2, 6-2.

The wins set up championship matches for Averbach and Bonifasi.

But Averbach fell 6-1, 6-1 to Franciscan's Leonel Lacayo, the #2 seed in #1 singles, and Bonifasi lost a 7-6 (4), 6-1 decision to Behrend's Carson Emili, who was the #3 seed in #6 singles.

Penn State Altoona totalled two points on Sunday, giving them 10 points during the weekend. Franciscan finished with 22 points, while Behrend secured 19.

Schultz Named AMCC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Penn State Altoona freshman Brian Schultz (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Schultz went 1-1 last week in #2 doubles, with his win coming against AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday. He also went 1-0 in #6 singles, with his victory making the difference in a narrow 5-4 win against Penn State Harrisburg on Friday.

The honor marks Schultz's first-ever AMCC Player of the Week award, and it is the first Penn State Altoona men's tennis player this season to be recognized as such.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team won its third match in a row, topping non-conference opponent Penn State Harrisburg 5-4 on Friday afternoon.

Penn State Harrisburg edged the Lions 2-1 in doubles, with Penn State Altoona's only win coming from the duo of Kevin Bartkus (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury)/Adam Kennedy (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock Township) in #3 doubles.

But Penn State Altoona took four of six in singles play to win the match.

Max Averbach (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) triumphed in #1 singles, and Michael Reinhardt (Altoona, PA/Hollidaysburg), Benjamin Heidorn (Bedford, PA/Bedford), and Brian Schultz (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) won in #4, #5, and #6 singles.

Penn State Altoona plays its final regular season match on Wednesday, April 11 at the Adler Tennis Courts against another non-conference team, Frostburg State University, at 3:30 PM.
